Breaking News:
On July 28, 2018, The 5th General Assembly and The 7th Competition of Abacus and Mental Arithmetic of WAAMA was held in Bandung, Indonesia. Four children representing the Canada Team managed to take home 3 golden medals and 1 silver medal for individual all-round contest.
There were more than 18 countries and districts that participated in the competition, including US, Canada, Britain, China, Tonga, Venezuela, Lebanon, Malaysia, Indonesia, Japan, India, Hong Kong, Taiwan and etc.
Toronto-based iStar Education of Canada sent out four competitors to attend this conglomeration: Adelina Xu (11 years old), Luke Yang (10years old), Xin Yue Zhang (18 years old), and Ethan Xie (7 years old).
The contest was divided by three sessions, each session limited 3 minutes:
1) Addition & subtraction up to ten 4 to 6 digits numbers, 30 questions per page, 4 pages; 2) Multiplication up to 4 digits times 3 digits, 120 questions per page, 4 pages ;
3) Division up to 6 digits by 4 digits, 120 questions per page, 4 pages.
During the limited time period, competitors were required to be very focused and quick in scanning questions and computing answers immediately. Competitors had to finish as many questions as possible and get as high of a score as possible to receive medallions and awards.
Lisa Wang, an expert in mental arithmetic, an executive director of the World Association of Abacus and Mental Arithmetic (WAAMA) and the founder of iStar Abacus, led the team of Torontonian children into success at the world championship competition. "The mental arithmetic Superman Chen Ran Ran, Guinness Record Keeper, used the same mental calculation method as ours." Lisa said.
Abacus has been listed as an intangible cultural heritage by UNESCO. iStar abacus can not only significantly improve children's computing ability, but also cultivate children's concentration, creativity, reasoning and memory. Through the combination of numbers and corresponding image, coordination of the hand and brain, the left and right brains can be used alternately to thus achieve whole brain development.
iStar abacus education is an educational model that integrates music, mathematics and art. It not only improves the IQ and emotional intelligence of ordinary children, but also helps children with intellectual disabilities to improve their multiple intelligences. In the past 13 years, iStar has trained many students who are admitted by the top universities in the world. It has also helped the kids with ADHD, autism and premature infants to improve their mental and behavioral intelligence.
“We hope that iStar abacus education can be introduced and popularized in Junior Schools of Ontario and benefit more children in Canada!” Many parents said.
